Pilot project to reduce medication waste during hospital stays proves successful

It’s common for patients to have excess medication during their hospital stay, but Gateshead Health Foundation Trust has been working on a solution to minimise this waste. Gateshead Health’s pilot project, which has been ongoing for the past few months, is a collaborative effort between Gateshead Health Foundation Trust and patients. It aims to reduce the amount of wasted medication by empowering patients to bring their medicines with them when admitted to the hospital and by letting staff know what repeat medications they have at home before discharge. The best at getting better – learning from ‘Nuka’

Earlier this month, we welcomed health and care colleagues from across the region to hear from two leaders from the Southcentral Foundation of Alaska. They spoke to us about their transformational journey and creation of the system of care, called ‘Nuka’, which is a powerful role model for integrated health systems globally. At the event, we heard from April Kyle, chief executive officer, and Doug Eby, medical director, who explained the approach taken to improve outcomes and reduce costs by working together with their communities over the last 20 years. Integrated working is at the heart of their approach, combined with a relentless focus on listening to their communities and …

“Illuminating and inspiring” – The palliative care learning event reconnecting, rebuilding and respecting across North Cumbria

Supported by Dr Kathryn Mannix, the event at the Greenhill Hotel (Wigton) looked at the ingredients which support a ‘good death’. Those who attended spent time considering the gaps, and how we could better work together to make improvements for patients. Dr Mannix, author of ‘With The End in Mind’ and ‘Listen’, described the event as “illuminating and inspiring” and spoke positively about the great energy in the room. The ‘Collaborative palliative care learning event – Reconnecting, Rebuilding and Respecting across North Cumbria’ was developed …

CLIC Awards 2022 – and the winners are…

This year, we launched the all-new CLIC Awards to celebrate the achievements of individuals and teams within our local health and social care system, with a particular focus on improvement and partnership working. We had a fantastic response, and were overwhelmed with the number and the calibre of nominations we received.
