Celebrating unsung heroes: World Carers Week

June 16, 2024

This month, from 10th to 16th June, we celebrated World Carers Week – an annual campaign which raises awareness of carers, highlights the challenges unpaid carers face, and recognises the invaluable contribution they make to families, communities, and our health and care services.

This year’s theme was ‘putting carers on the map’, and was an opportunity to help people who do not think of themselves as having caring responsibilities to identify as carers, and provides a space for access to much-needed support.

You can watch a video from David Purdue (chief nurse, AHP and people officer for the North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care Board), who started the week with a video, highlighting he importance of recognising carers and advocating to ensure their voices are heard:

You can also hear from Paddy Middleton (carers lead at Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS), who shares details on the pioneering five step programme by which supports carers wellbeing across the region. This innovative initiative is designed to support the wellbeing of carers across the region, providing essential resources and community connections. Watch the video to see Paddy and his team in action, making a real difference for our dedicated carers:

You can show your support, and find out more about Carers week on the North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care Board website.
