This Connect & Learn session on 17 September 2024 saw Andy Crosbie (Director, Collective Impact Agency/Gateshead Community Bridgebuilders) and Fozia Haider (Gateshead Community Bridgebuilder) deliver a presentation on ‘Gateshead Community Bridgebuilders – building community power’.
Our Connect & Learns are a series of online learning events, planned with the purpose of sharing and spreading improvement work across the North East and North Cumbria health and care system.
Each with a different focus, the Connect & Learns are more than just information-sharing – they are an opportunity for you to connect with like-minded colleagues around a specific topic, to generate ideas, and take forward improvements in your own work, team, or service.
The Gateshead Community Bridgebuilders (GCB) are working to enable local people to have the opportunities, skills, and confidence to engage in making decisions that are going to improve their lives now and in the future.
The GCB are a team of individuals who represent many of the diverse communities of Gateshead. This team runs experiments which try to challenge the systems that marginalise and build the power of local communities.
The Bridgebuilders believe that empowered communities are essential for a healthy society. In this session, we heard what this team has done to achieve that end, the challenges they have encountered, what it is like to step into a new type of decision-making space, and what they have learnt in the process.

As we approach the 3-year mark of this initiative, we want to share with folks across the system how we actually do this. This will not be a prescriptive step-by-step guide but a series of stories and insights to fire your imagination and, hopefully, get you excited about what might be possible for our communities.
This event is aimed at people who care about community engagement, diversity & inclusion, Place work, and/or transformational governance. We anticipate this event will attract people both from local services and from local communities.
