This Connect & Learn session on 9 October 2025 saw Dr Matthew Harris (Imperial College London) deliver a presentation on ‘Learning from Brazil’s community health worker model’.
Our Connect & Learns are a series of online learning events, planned with the purpose of sharing and spreading improvement work across the North East and North Cumbria health and care system.
Each with a different focus, the Connect & Learns are more than just information-sharing – they are an opportunity for you to connect with like-minded colleagues around a specific topic, to generate ideas, and take forward improvements in your own work, team, or service.
In this session, Dr Harris introduced the Community Health and Wellbeing Worker role, and how it has been implemented in the UK over the last three years, based on decades of experience in Brazil. Now in over two dozen localities in England, and mentioned in the NHS Ten Year Plan as a key strategy to deliver integrated neighbourhood health, we explored how it differs from existing roles, the benefits that brings to communities and the wider system, and what has been learned regarding the best way to implement the role.
