This Connect & Learn session on 3 December 2025 saw colleagues from across the North East and North Cumbria come together to explore ‘The cost of dying’.
Our Connect & Learns are a series of online learning events, planned with the purpose of sharing and spreading improvement work across the North East and North Cumbria health and care system.
Each with a different focus, the Connect & Learns are more than just information-sharing – they are an opportunity for you to connect with like-minded colleagues around a specific topic, to generate ideas, and take forward improvements in your own work, team, or service.
In this session, Dr Colette Hawkins (Academic Consultant in Palliative Medicine, South Tees NHS FT) introduced Routes to Rights, a multi-agency project and resource to raise awareness of the law as a tool for better care around end of life.
Living with progressive illness, or towards end of life, is challenging. Problems around money, jobs, social care and other aspects of daily life can generate an exhausting battle for information and support affecting both patient and carer. Rights to choice around health and care decisions are frequently overlooked.
