Our Healthy Weight and Treating Obesity Community of Practice is a great opportunity to:

          • network with others who have an interest in this topic
          • hear about best practice and share ideas about what has worked in other areas/services
          • build connectivity across the system
          • improve outcomes for our communities.
Healthy Weight and Treating Obesity Community of Practice
One of the most significant and complex challenges we face in our communities is the rising level of obesity.

Following on from the successful LOC in the Lakes Conference in November 2024 there is a desire to continue to learn and improve as a system on this important area of work.

To support this we have launched our Healthy Weight and Treating Obesity community of practice. This community is for anyone interested in improving the outcomes for our communities in the North East and North Cumbria – including all partners in our system, those with formal or informal roles, regional and national experts and those with lived experience.

In our first session, we were joined by Will Smith (Healthier Weight and Treating Obesity Strategic Manager, North East and North Cumbria ICS) who provided an update on the system workstreams following the conference and the sub-groups that people could get involved in.

Sam Joughlin (Director and Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist, Together We)  presented: Beyond the scale: Psychological aspects of obesity. This workshop aimed to broaden understanding of the causes of obesity, focusing on psychological elements and hear from lived experience voices.

We agreed on the next steps for this CoP which included creating a collaborative wall space and continuing to meet bi-monthly. You can find a recording of our launch session below:

Below is the recording of our second Healthy Weight and Treating Obesity Community of Practice session.

Will Smith (Healthier Weight and Treating Obesity Strategic Manager, North East and North Cumbria ICS) provided an update on the system workstreams.

We were joined by Lesley Barron (Poverty Proofing Co-ordinator from Children North East), who shared with us what poverty proofing is, its principles, the causes of poverty and the consequences. As a group, we considered the impact poverty has on people and their ability to lead a healthy lifestyle and what good practice exists in North East and North Cumbria to alleviate or mitigate the impact of poverty.

We used our collaborative wall space on Padlet to start mapping the services related to healthy weight and treating obesity that are available across our system.

For our July community of practice session, Will Smith (Healthier Weight and Treating Obesity Strategic Manager, North East and North Cumbria ICS) provided an update on the system workstreams.

Our guest speaker was Benjamin Richardson (Clinical Lead Dietitian from South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust), who presented "Evidence-based Dietary Advice for Weight Management". This session explored whether the standard dietary advice that many have been trained to give is effective for weight management. For example, many people whom we are trying to help inform us that they are calorie counting, following low-fat or Eatwell Guide dietary advice, but their weight loss and chronic disease management are poor. A recording of the session can be found below:

This was our fourth session of the Healthy Weight and Treating Obesity Community of Practice.

Will Smith (Strategic Manager for Healthier Weight and Treating Obesity, North East and North Cumbria ICS) shared an update on the system-wide workstreams.

We were also joined by Dr. Susanna Mills (Consultant in Public Health at Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne & Wear NHS Trust, and Research Fellow at Newcastle University), who led a session on Evidence-based recommendations for supporting healthy weight in people living with severe mental illness. She delivered this on behalf of Dr. Angela Rodrigues (Associate Professor in Psychology at Northumbria University), who contributed to developing the session but was unable to attend.

The session highlighted findings from recent research on weight management among people living with severe mental illness and included a group discussion on the practical implications of the evidence. A recording of the session is below:
