Do you have team leadership experience? Are you ready to move up to leading larger functions or departments, more complex projects with a wider reach and/or leading other team leaders? Do you want to use your leadership skills to shake things up, challenge the status quo and find a better way of doing things? Then the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson programme is for you.

The University of Birmingham has been delivering the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Masters in Healthcare Leadership since 2013. The Anderson programme is commissioned by the NHS Leadership Academy, and to date the partnership has delivered to 100 cohorts with over 3,500 participants have completing the programme. The Anderson Senior Leader Apprenticeship and is a new and popular route for learners and their employers to access the award-winning Anderson programme via the apprenticeship levy.

The Anderson Senior Leader Apprenticeship is a fully accredited programme that leads to an NHS Leadership Academy Award in Senior Healthcare Leadership, as well as completion of the apprenticeship standard. Successful completion of the Anderson apprenticeship then allows access to the Masters in Healthcare Leadership (MSc) – this is subject to a top-up fee.

The programme provides you with the knowledge, skills and behaviours required for leaders from all backgrounds, clinical and non-clinical, to create a more capable and compassionate healthcare system. The Apprenticeship is designed to holistically develop the capabilities, skills, expertise, attitudes, and behaviours to support you in leading teams to create tangible and positive performance improvement at the front line. The Apprenticeship will enable you to:

• Develop a deeper understanding of the patient experience and strengthening of existing leadership practice through cutting-edge theory and evidence
• Work more strategically with greater collaboration across large and complex programmes, departments, services, and systems of care
• Bring immediate positive and productive changes to teams, organisations, services, and patients in areas such as increasing staff morale, improving patient experience, effective service redesign and providing financial benefits
• Improve personal impact to help drive progress in teams and inspire organisations to build a culture of inclusive, patient-centred care
• Focus on becoming more resilient leaders, able to meet the demands of working in often high-pressured healthcare environments, improving patient outcomes and experiences

A North-East based cohort of the programme will be commencing in January 2025. Learners can be from anywhere in the region, but must be able to travel to approximately 13 face-to-face workshop days throughout the duration of the programme. The costs of travel and accommodation are not covered by apprenticeship funding, so you would need to fund this privately or through your employer.
