Funded places for the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism are available for health and social care staff across the North East and North Cumbria until the end of October 2026.
Named after Oliver McGowan, whose preventable death highlighted the need for better training, it equips staff with practical skills to meet people’s needs and reduce health inequalities.
It is mandated by NHS England and helps meet the statutory requirement for learning disability and autism training.
It has been co-produced by people with lived experience and helps staff provide safe, kind and inclusive care.

Staff must complete the 90-minute e-learning and the training tier that matches their role. The e-learning can be completed in parts to fit around busy schedules.
Tier 1 – for staff who do not provide direct care, including administrative and corporate staff
Tier 2 – for staff who provide direct care or support to patients or service users
Both tiers include training co-delivered by people with lived experience.
Managers can support staff by sharing available dates and giving them time to complete the e-learning and relevant session.
