Health literacy is about people being able to find, understand, check and use information to make choices about their health and wellbeing. A health literate organisation makes it easy for people to do this.
Our organisational health literacy standards give you a framework to work towards. This will help you to become a health literate organisation. The supporting toolkit will give you the tools and resources to help you to meet the standards. They will help you put things in place to improve health literacy and meet the needs of the communities we serve.
There are 6 organisational health literacy standards. These are based on the 10 attributes of a health literate organisation.
1. Organisational leadership, governance and improvement - Leaders in the organisation encourage staff to work in a health literate way. They make it easy for them to do this. They help to make sure health literacy is part of the day-to-day business of the organisation.
2. Written information - Written information is clear, simple and easy to understand. Written information meets the needs of our communities. This includes online and multimedia resources.
3. Engagement and involving people - Local communities are involved to make sure that what we do works for them.
4. Staff knowledge and learning resources - Staff have access to training, support and resources to improve their health literacy skills.
5. Spoken and multimedia communication - Staff speak simply and clearly. They check how well they’ve communicated and encourage 2-way conversations. Recorded messages and videos use clear, everyday language.
6. Physical and digital environments - Services and information are easy to find, use and understand. This includes online information, support, and services.
