The Integrated Care Board (ICB) North East and North Cumbria Sustainability Programme will use its role to influence the regional healthcare community in reducing the NHS's impact on the factors that influence climate change. Highlighting the importance of including environmental considerations in moving from cure to prevention, hospital to home, and analogue to digital.
The North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care Board (ICB) has proudly launched this dedicated sustainability webpage on the Boost platform, marking a significant step in the mission to reduce the health and care system’s environmental impact and embed sustainability into regional health strategies.
Peter Lillie, the ICB’s Sustainability Stategy Programme Lead, introduced the initiative in a newly recorded video (right), where he outlined the board’s commitment to addressing climate change through healthcare reform.
Peter said: “We’re really proud to launch this… The platform will act as a central reference point for best practices and policy updates related to environmental sustainability across our region.”
“We want this to be a useful tool for everyone. It’s a live platform, so if you have suggestions, please reach out.”
The ICB’s sustainability programme aims to lead the regional healthcare community in tackling factors that contribute to climate change by promoting transitions such as:
These transitions align with NHS England’s wider green agenda, which calls for ICBs to integrate environmental goals into core healthcare objectives – including population health, health inequality reduction, and enhanced productivity.
It is clear that sustainability should not be treated as a separate or secondary goal, but rather a fundamental part of the ICB’s operational and strategic mission.
