Medicines make up a quarter in total NHS carbon footprint in the North East and North Cumbria – and everyone involved in supply, prescribing, dispensing and administration of medicines has huge potential to help reduce that carbon footprint through the work they do.
Our key priorities include:
- reducing overprescribing of medicines
- appropriate use of inhalers and anaesthetics
- plus we can review how we carry out processes around medicines to reduce waste
We also link to non-medicines initiatives like green social prescribing and the wider health creation agenda to keep people well.
Each of our Trusts has a member of the pharmacy team who works with their Net Zero Lead to contribute to the Green Plan. Trusts and General Practices have taken opportunities to share their learning with one another and with colleagues across the North East and North Cumbria in webinars and workshops.
