The North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care Board (ICB) has proudly launched a dedicated sustainability webpage on the Boost platform, marking a significant step in the mission to reduce the health and care system’s environmental impact and embed sustainability into regional health strategies.
Peter Lillie, the ICB’s Sustainability Programme Lead, introduced the initiative in a newly recorded video (below), where he outlined the board’s commitment to addressing climate change through healthcare reform. Peter said: “We’re really proud to launch this… The platform will act as a central reference point for best practices and policy updates related to environmental sustainability across our region.”
The ICB’s sustainability programme aims to lead the regional healthcare community in tackling factors that contribute to climate change by promoting transitions such as:
These transitions align with NHS England’s wider green agenda, which calls for ICBs to integrate environmental goals into core healthcare objectives – including population health, health inequality reduction, and enhanced productivity.
It is clear that sustainability should not be treated as a separate or secondary goal, but rather a fundamental part of the ICB’s operational and strategic mission.
The webpage will serve as a live, evolving hub, where staff and partners can find up-to-date information on regional sustainability efforts, policy documents, and best-practice case studies. A refreshed green plan is due to be published in 2025, and will also be made available through the new webpage.
Peter concluded by encouraging feedback: “We want this to be a useful tool for everyone. It’s a live platform, so if you have suggestions, please reach out.”
