NHS England highlights North East and North Cumbria COPD initiative

A pioneering COPD programme developed across the North East and North Cumbria has been recognised by NHS England as an example of good practice. The OPTIMISE programme uses a proactive, data-driven approach to identify patients most at risk of COPD flare-ups and provides support before they reach a crisis point.

Last winter, 159 GP practices reviewed 1,936 patients identified as being at high risk. Rather than relying on annual reviews, OPTIMISE focuses on those most likely to benefit from intervention ahead of winter, helping to optimise treatment and support self-management.

The results were significant. Patients who received an OPTIMISE review experienced 53% fewer A&E attendances, 89% fewer 999 respiratory calls and 68% fewer days spent in hospital compared with those who did not receive a review.

Following the success of the pilot, the programme will be rolled out more widely across the region this winter, supporting more people with COPD to stay healthier for longer while reducing pressure on urgent and emergency care services.
