Since 2022, REN has worked to increase diversity and inclusion in children and young people’s (CYP) mental health research, developing a regional CYP mental health research partnership network. This work supports wider system priorities to improve mental health services for children and young people, recognising the essential role of high‑quality, inclusive research in shaping decisions and improving care.

The Northern Youth Research Partnership – co‑led by NIHR Applied Research Collaboration North East and North Cumbria and Investing in Children – adds to this by supporting young people to lead and influence the research that affects their lives. This joint event brings these aims together, creating a space for researchers, VCSE partners, young people, and colleagues across the health and care system to connect, share learning, and explore how youth‑led approaches can strengthen participation, involvement and engagement in health research.

What to expect

The session will share recent activity and emerging outcomes from both the REN team and the Northern Youth Research Partnership, including:

• Insights from young people involved in the Northern Youth Research Partnership on how they are shaping health and social care research
• Opportunities for researchers, VCSE organisations and young people to learn more about each other’s work and explore potential collaboration
• An introduction to REN’s Matching Tool, supporting more inclusive and effective partnership working
• Discussion on how youth‑led approaches can influence future CYP mental health research and service development
• A chance to share personal commitments or actions attendees may take as a result of the session

Whether you are already involved in research or interested in getting started, this event offers a valuable opportunity to connect, build partnerships, and support more inclusive, youth‑focused approaches across the region.

Who should attend?

This event is open to staff and volunteers across the North East and North Cumbria health and care system, VCSE organisations, researchers, and members of the public. It may be of particular interest to anyone working with or alongside children and young people, or those keen to strengthen inclusive, evidence‑informed approaches in mental health and related areas. No prior research experience is required.
