We’re asking for your help to share the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism with NHS colleagues, teams and networks across the North East and North Cumbria.

Funded places are available until the end of October 2026. Please encourage staff to book and complete the training before then.

What is the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training?

The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism is the government’s preferred training for health and social care staff.

It helps meet the statutory requirement for learning disability and autism training and is mandated by NHS England.

The training was developed following the preventable death of Oliver McGowan.

Oliver’s death highlighted the need for all health and social care staff to receive high-quality training that helps them understand the needs of autistic people and people with a learning disability.

Why does this training matter?

Autistic people and people with a learning disability often experience poorer health outcomes.

This training was co-produced by people with lived experience and helps staff to:

  • understand people’s individual needs
  • make reasonable adjustments
  • communicate better
  • keep people safe

If we get care right for autistic people and people with a learning disability, we can get it right for everyone.

Who needs to complete the training?

All NHS staff working in Care Quality Commission (CQC)-regulated services need to complete the training.

Staff should complete the 90-minute e-learning course and the training tier that matches their role.

  • Tier 1 is for staff who do not provide direct care to patients.
  • Tier 2 is for staff who provide direct care or support to patients or service users.

How can I share this training with colleagues?

To make sharing as easy as possible, this toolkit includes ready-made:

  • Intranet copy
  • Newsletter copy
  • Web copy
  • Social media posts

Please use the toolkit to promote the training through your channels and networks.

Help us encourage staff to book and complete the training before the funded contract ends in October 2026.

Thank you for your support.
