We’re delighted to share that Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust has won a top accolade at the 2025 HSJ Patient Safety Awards for its innovative work addressing health inequalities.
The trust’s DNA predictor and navigation pilot – a project using data analytics to identify patients at risk of missing vital diagnostic tests – was named winner in the Advancing Patient Safety with Data and Analytics category. The initiative focuses on endoscopy appointments, which are crucial for early cancer diagnosis, and aims to reduce missed appointments by proactively contacting high-risk patients to address barriers such as transport, anxiety, or lack of information.
This collaborative effort brought together public health experts, data analysts, and clinical teams, and is already showing promising results. The approach is now being expanded to other services, with ongoing work to improve patient engagement and support GPs in providing clearer information at the point of referral.
