The Sound Doctor: evidence based, clinically led, patient education through bite-size films – saves time and improves outcomes.

Clinicians across the NHS know that empowering patients with the right knowledge at the right time leads to better self-management, improved outcomes, and reduced pressure on services. That’s where The Sound Doctor comes in.

The Sound Doctor is an award-winning, clinically led digital library of over 500 short, high-quality films designed to support people living with long-term conditions. Their films are created in partnership with healthcare professionals and people with lived experience, covering everything from diabetes and heart failure, to COPD and mental health. Each one is concise, jargon-free, and focused on helping people live better at home – not just understand their condition, but actively manage it.

Why it works for you

For clinicians, time is short – and patients often leave appointments overwhelmed, forgetful, or unable to process everything discussed. The Sound Doctor offers an effective way to reinforce key messages outside the consultation room, with reliable content that mirrors clinical advice.

  • Save time by reducing repeated explanations during appointments
  • Improve patient confidence in managing their condition
  • Reduce demand on face-to-face care through better understanding and fewer avoidable admissions
  • Support structured education with content that’s flexible and engaging

Each condition library is divided into logical topics – diagnosis, lifestyle, medication, emotional wellbeing, and when to seek help – and is available to patients via simple shareable links (no logins or passwords). They can watch at their own pace, on any device, as often as they like.

What clinicians say

Feedback from clinicians has been overwhelmingly positive. In areas already using The Sound Doctor, teams report that patients arrive at appointments better informed, more engaged in their care, and with fewer avoidable queries.

“It gives patients a toolkit — and it gives us back time to focus on what really matters in clinic.” GP (NHS South West London Integrated Care Board (ICB))

Evidence and impact

All content is evidence-based and independently evaluated, with measurable improvements in:

  • Knowledge and self-confidence
  • Medication adherence
  • Attendance at structured education
  • Patient satisfaction

It’s already in use across NHS trusts, ICBs, and public health teams, and can be embedded into pathways, digital front doors, and social prescribing programmes.

A recent health literacy project delivered in partnership with the North East and North Cumbria, showed just how effective this approach can be. Patients described the films as “like gold dust”, offering clarity, reassurance, and practical tools they could return to at their own pace. The project significantly improved understanding of long-term conditions and confidence in self-management – especially among groups that traditionally struggle to engage with written or face-to-face education.
