Health and care professionals across the North East and North Cumbria are invited to join a series of upcoming Northern Cancer Alliance (NCA) webinars, offering valuable insights into radiotherapy side effects and cancer recognition.
These free, online sessions – delivered via Microsoft Teams – will cover both acute and late effects of radiotherapy, as well as practical guidance on bladder cancer recognition and referral. With expert speakers from across the region, each session includes time for Q&A and is designed to support clinical practice, enhance patient care, and align with the NCA’s wider education and innovation efforts.

Claire Powlesland, Advanced Clinical Practitioner in Radiotherapy and Oncology, and Yvonne Anderson, Macmillan Lead Gynae Oncology Nurse, will introduce us to the late effects of pelvic radiotherapy, covering:
Following the introduction, we will be given a brief overview of the service at South Tees with a focus on eligibility criteria, as well as hearing about the Macmillan late effects of pelvic radiotherapy project to date and an update on the development of a resource directory.

Thursday 18th September 2025, 12.30-1.15pm, Microsoft Teams
Mr Kanagasabai Sahadevan, Consultant Urologist at SRH & UHND and Northern Cancer Alliance Urology Consultant Lead, will provide a refresher on bladder cancer recognition and referral, as well as the management of bladder symptoms (including non-visible haematuria and recurrent UTIs) to enhance and improve clinical assessment and decision-making.
This session is particularly important given the different non-GP practice-based routes open to patients for the treatment of UTIs, and national and regional trends that highlight a fall in one-year survival rates, gender differences in survival rates, and a significant number of patients being diagnosed via non-USC routes.
The webinar will be especially helpful for GPs, Nurse Practitioners and other clinical roles and forms part of the Northern Cancer Alliance’s PCN Cancer DES delivery framework this year. It will complement the audit work being undertaken at practice level and the release of the NCA Bladder Cancer toolkit.
